Gram-negative Sepsis

Sepsis - one of the most common causes of death.

Sepsis is the body’s overwhelming and life-threatening response to infection that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. Sepsis is one of the most common causes of death in modern intensive care. More people die annually of sepsis than of the most common forms of cancer - lung, breast and prostate - combined. Sepsis is caused by specific bacterial toxins (endotoxins) entering the blood stream. Endotoxins, or lipopolysaccharide (LPS), are a major component of the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria. When endotoxins are released into the bloodstream, a strong reactive response is produced by the immune system which can develop into sepsis. Alteco Medical's product, the Alteco® LPS Adsorber, effectively reduces endotoxins in the bloodstream and can thereby prevent or reverse the sepsis process. By removing endotoxins from the bloodstream, the critical and life-threatening part of the sepsis process can be counteracted.
